I stand as a sentinel in the vineyard to defend against nature's cruelty without needing chemical armor. Created to thrive where others shiver, I bring a bold and dark intensity to cool climates that usually only dream of reds like me.

Why you'll like me

Why you'll like me

I'm sustainable

I'm colorful

I'm smooth

People love me because I'm a survivor who doesn't need a hazmat suit to thrive. I offer organic potential because I naturally fight off mildew. Plus, in chilly regions where other reds turn pale and thin, I deliver inky depths and velvety textures that mimic the warm south. I'm the answer for vintners tired of fighting a losing battle against the rain.

Why maybe not

I'm controversial

I'm earthy

I'm hybrid

Some purists turn their noses up because my family tree includes non-vinifera ancestors. If I'm treated carelessly or picked too early, I can taste a bit like a vegetable patch or burnt rubber. I need respect to avoid becoming a rustic and earthy mess in your glass. My acidity drops fast if I hang around too long, making me flabby.

When drinking, notice this

Deep color

Soft tannins

Cherry notes

Expect a glass full of deeply pigmented purple juice that looks like ink. On the palate, I usually present moderate acidity and very soft, velvety tannins. You'll likely catch waves of dark fruits like cherries and plums, sometimes wrapped in a spicy or slightly herbal blanket. My structure feels surprisingly Mediterranean despite my northern upbringing.

MY LIFE STORIES

A Calculated Conception

A Calculated Conception

I was born in 1967 at the Geilweilerhof Institute in Germany, the brainchild of Professor Gerhardt Alleweldt. While the world was listening to psychedelic rock, I was being engineered for a very practical purpose. My father was Chambourcin, a resilient French-American hybrid, and my mother was Diana, a classic white German cross. This mixed heritage was controversial from the start. I wasn't just bred for flavor. I was designed to be a soldier against fungal diseases. My existence challenged the notion that quality only comes from pure and fragile lineages. I was the future knocking on the door.

Growing up wasn't easy. For decades, I was kept in experimental plots and treated like a science experiment rather than a serious contender for fine wine. It wasn't until 1996 that the German authorities finally granted me full citizenship to be used for quality wine. I became the first fungus-resistant variety to earn this honor. Suddenly, vintners realized I could ripen in the rain and cold without rotting. I didn't need constant chemical spraying. I became a hero for organic viticulture, proving that you can protect the earth and still produce a delicious and full-bodied red wine.

Today, I travel well beyond my German nursery. You will find me thriving in the rainy hills of England, the cool fields of Belgium, and even up in Scandinavia. I allow these northern regions to make red wines with actual body and color, something previously thought impossible. While I have a thick skin literally, I have a soft soul. My wines are often compared to Southern European reds because of their depth and mild tannins. I'm the bridge between the harsh northern climate and the desire for a warm and comforting glass of red. I'm the green revolution in a bottle.
