I was born in the sunny south of Portugal, likely near Lisbon. For the longest time, everyone called me by a different name. You might know me as Periquita, which is actually a brand name that became synonymous with me because the wine was just that famous. It is a bit like calling all tissues Kleenex. I dominated the vineyards of the Setúbal Peninsula for nearly two centuries. While other varieties have come and gone, I have remained the most planted red grape in the southern part of the country because I simply refuse to give up.

But if you stick me in fertile, wet clay? Forget about it. I become diluted, leafy, and frankly quite boring. This pickiness is why I rule the sandy plains of Tejo and Setúbal. I need that heat and that struggle to really show you what I'm made of. It is not being difficult. It is having standards.
