Thriving where others freeze to death is my specialty. While sensitive aristocrats demand constant sunshine, I deliver deep color and bold character in the shivering north. I'm the rugged pioneer of the wine world.

Why you'll like me

Why you'll like me

I'm tough

I'm reliable

I'm colorful

If you live where summer is just a rumor, I'm your absolute best friend. My superpower is ripening fully when other reds stay green and bitter. I bring a surprising depth of color and flavor to places usually reserved for polar bears. Winemakers love me because I don't fuss about a little frost, and I offer a genuine red wine experience without the need for a greenhouse.

I'm rustic

I'm sharp

Some purists turn their noses up at my family tree since I have a bit of wild blood in me. If I'm treated carelessly, I can get a bit leafy or aggressive in the glass. I'm not here to mimic a velvet Bordeaux, so don't expect that softness. I have a rustic edge that might feel a bit too untamed for those used to polished international stars.

When drinking, notice this

Deep color

Dark fruit

High acid

You won't miss me in the glass because my color is practically ink. I pour out a dark ruby that promises intensity right away. On the palate, I tend to show notes of dark cherries and wild berries mixed with a savory earthiness. I usually carry a decent acidic kick to keep things lively, making me a great match for hearty food that needs cutting through.

A Cold War Creation

A Cold War Creation

I was born in 1964 during a time of walls and secrets, created by Professor Vilem Kraus in what was then Czechoslovakia. He wanted a survivor, so he introduced the noble St. Laurent to the rugged Zarya Severa. It was a risky romance between refined elegance and wild Asian resilience. Eventually, I was sent off to Geisenheim in Germany for further education, where I proved that I could handle winters that would make a Merlot cry for its mother.

For a long time, people whispered about my mixed heritage. Because I possess genes from outside the traditional European nobility, some laws didn't know what to do with me. But while the bureaucrats argued, I started conquering the north. I found homes in England, Denmark, and even Sweden. I became the hero of the cool-climate revolution, proving that you don't need Mediterranean sun to make a red wine that actually tastes like red wine.

Today, I'm worn like a badge of honor by growers on the frontier of viticulture. I'm often blended to add color and guts to weaker wines, but I shine solo when handled with respect. I might not hang out in the most famous French chateaux, but I have carved out a kingdom in the frost. I represent the possibility of wine where nature says no, and I do it with a dark, inky smile.
