Hailing from the steep, sun-baked slopes of Portugal, I battle the heat to bring you intense elegance. While my backbone is steely and strong, my heart is full of violets and bergamot perfume.

Why you'll like me
Why you'll like me
I'm aromatic
I'm ageworthy
I'm complex
You'll love me because I offer the best of both worlds. I possess the muscular structure to age for decades, yet I dress myself in the most delicate perfume of crushed violets and Earl Grey tea. Whether I'm fortifying a vintage Port or standing alone as a dry red, I bring an intensity and complexity that few can match. I'm basically a heavyweight boxer in a tuxedo.

Why maybe not
I'm intense
I'm tannic
I'm scarce
My intensity can be a bit much for the faint of heart. If you prefer light, watery juice, I'm definitely not your guy. I have small berries and produce tiny yields, which drives farmers crazy because I'm high maintenance in the vineyard. Also, my tannins can be quite aggressive when I'm young, so I often need a bit of time to settle down and behave.

When drinking, notice this
Floral notes
Deep color
Firm tannins
Look for a deep, inky color in your glass that you can barely see through. When you take a sniff, expect a blast of floral notes, specifically violets, mixed with dark fruits like blackberries. On the palate, I usually bring a full body and firm, gripping tannins that coat your mouth. There is almost always a hint of bergamot citrus lurking in the background.

MY LIFE STORIES
The Pride of Portugal
The Pride of Portugal
The Pride of Portugal
I was born in the Dao or Douro regions of Portugal, though the exact spot is a bit fuzzy. For centuries, I've been the undisputed king of Portuguese vines. While other grapes focus on pumping out high volumes of juice, I focus on concentration. I grew up on the steep, terraced schist slopes where water is scarce and the sun is relentless. This harsh upbringing toughened my skin and concentrated my flavors, making me the backbone of the country's most famous fortified wines. I'm a survivor by nature.

You might think being the top dog means life is easy, but I almost disappeared completely. After phylloxera devastated Europe, farmers replanted everything but hesitated with me. Why? Because I'm terrible at producing volume. I give very few bunches, and for a while, quantity ruled over quality. I was considered too difficult and low-yielding to be profitable. By the mid-20th century, I occupied less than one percent of the Douro's vineyards. I was practically a ghost, kept alive only by a few stubborn believers who knew my true worth.

Thankfully, the world came to its senses. In the 1980s, clonal selection helped me improve my yields just enough to be viable again. Winemakers realized that without me, their blends lacked soul, depth, and that signature floral aroma. Now, I'm not just a blending component for Port. I'm shining as a single-varietal dry red wine, proving I don't need sugar to be sweet. I've even started traveling, planting my roots in Australia and South Africa. The King is back on the throne, and I'm not going anywhere.

Porto
It is the heavyweight champion of dessert drinks. While the fruit grows upriver, the magic happens in cool cellars where time stands still. This isn't just booze - it is liquid history with a serious sugar kick.

Portuguese Ruby Port
Imagine diving into a pool of crushed berries and spirits without the pretension of vintage aging. This is the entry-level superstar that keeps things fresh, fruity, and approachable, offering a vibrant snapshot of the Douro's energetic side.

Portuguese Tawny Port
While its cousin stays fruity and youthful inside giant vats, this wine breathes air in smaller barrels until it turns a beautiful amber hue. It trades fresh berries for complex dried fruits, nuts, and delicious toffee flavors.
