I have small berries and produce tiny yields, which drives farmers crazy because I'm high maintenance in the vineyard. While other grapes focus on pumping out high volumes of juice, I focus on concentration. I grew up on the steep, terraced schist slopes where water is scarce and the sun is relentless. This harsh upbringing toughened my skin and concentrated my flavors, making me the backbone of the country's most famous fortified wines. I'm a survivor by nature.

Because I'm terrible at producing volume. I give very few bunches, and for a while, quantity ruled over quality. I was considered too difficult and low-yielding to be profitable. By the mid-20th century, I occupied less than one percent of the Douro's vineyards. I was practically a ghost, kept alive only by a few stubborn believers who knew my true worth.
