A traveler at heart, wandering through the Balkans before finding my true home in the Pannonian Basin. Often called the spicy soul of the region, carrying the weight of history in my light, vibrant frame.

Why you'll like me

Why you'll like me

I'm spicy

I'm elegant

I'm vibrant

People adore me because I'm the perfect alternative to heavy, tannic monsters. I bring a playful spiciness, almost like a dash of paprika, mixed with bright red fruit that dances on your tongue. If you love Pinot Noir but want something with a bit more rustic, Balkan soul, I'm your guy. I offer elegance without being pretentious.

Why maybe not

I'm fussy

I'm sensitive

I'm pale

My growers often pull their hair out because I'm notoriously sensitive to the weather. I rot easily if it rains too much, and sometimes I just refuse to ripen evenly. For drinkers, if you only drink ink-black wines that stain your teeth, you might find my lighter body a bit too delicate or transparent.

When drinking, notice this

High acidity

Low tannins

Paprika spice

You'll immediately notice my color is a translucent ruby, never opaque. On the palate, expect a lively kick of acidity that makes your mouth water, followed by soft, barely-there tannins. I'm all about that signature spice note-think red pepper or paprika-that lingers long after the fruit fades.

MY LIFE STORIES

A Rolling Stone

A Rolling Stone

I wasn't born in Hungary, though that's where I became a legend. I likely started my journey somewhere near Lake Skadar on the Albanian-Montenegrin border, hitching a ride north with fleeing populations during the Ottoman wars. I settled into the Pannonian Basin centuries ago and decided to stay. While I was once the most planted red in the country, phylloxera and communism nearly wiped me out. I'm a survivor, though, holding onto my heritage while the world moved on to easier international varieties.

The Bull's Blood

You can't talk about me without mentioning the legend of Egri Bikavér. I used to be the backbone of that famous Bull's Blood blend, giving it the spicy kick that allegedly terrified the invading Turks. Legend says the defenders of Eger Castle drank wine mixed with bull's blood to gain strength. Spoiler alert: it was just me staining their beards red. I provided the zest and energy in those blends before the industrial era pushed me aside for higher-yielding grapes.

For a while, people forgot about me. I was hard to grow and didn't fit the trend of heavy, oaky wines. But look at me now. A new generation of winemakers realized that my finicky nature in the vineyard is worth the effort for the elegance I produce in the glass. I'm leading the charge for authentic, indigenous flavors. I might be high-maintenance, demanding perfect sunshine and gentle hands, but the result is a wine with a soul that you just can't manufacture.
