Born from a calculated union between a French aristocrat and a colorful eccentric, I possess a brooding intensity that demands contemplation. My personality is deep, dark, and incredibly structured, favoring quiet strength over loud flamboyance.

Why you'll like me

Why you'll like me

I'm deep

I'm ageworthy

I'm colorful

If you love wines that look like ink and taste like history, I'm your perfect match. My parents gifted me with incredible color-even my flesh is red-and a backbone of steel that means I can age for ages. I bring a serious, contemplative depth to the table that shallow varieties just can't match. I'm dependable, strong, and full of character.

Why maybe not

I'm tannic

I'm acidic

I'm intense

Sometimes my steely nature feels a bit too rigid for casual drinkers. If I'm harvested too early, my green pepper notes turn aggressive, and my acidity might strip the enamel off your teeth. I take time to soften up. I'm not a quick fling. I require patience and a hearty meal to tame my wild side.

Inky color

Herbal spice

Firm tannins

You won't be able to look through my glass since I'm practically opaque. On the nose, expect a wave of dark forest berries mixed with a distinct herbaceous kick, much like my father Cabernet. My structure is firm, often requiring time in oak to smooth out the edges, and I leave a long, savory impression.

MY LIFE STORIES

Born of Science

Born of Science

I was born in 1950 at a research institute in Odessa, Ukraine, which explains my other name, Odessa Black. My creators played matchmaker between two very different French celebrities. My father, Cabernet Sauvignon, gave me class and structure, while my mother, Alicante Bouschet, gave me my most striking feature: red flesh. Most grapes are clear on the inside, but I bleed color through and through. It was a time of scientific ambition, and I was engineered to survive harsh winters while delivering the depth of a noble Bordeaux variety.

Being a teinturier, or a dyer grape, is a rare privilege in the wine world. While others rely solely on their skins to color the juice, I bring pigment from my very core. This makes me a favorite secret weapon for winemakers who need to boost the color of a pale vintage. For a long time, people just used me as a blending partner, a quiet workhorse adding shade and spine to weaker wines. I stood silently in the background, providing the steel framework for softer varieties to drape themselves over.

Finding My Voice

Eventually, I migrated west and found a true home in the vineyards of Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Here, vintners realized I wasn't just a blender but a star in my own right. They treat me with respect, letting me ripen fully to tame my herbaceous streak. Now, I stand alone in the bottle, offering a unique, rustic alternative to the mainstream reds. I'm the silent thinker at the party-dark, mysterious, and full of stories for those patient enough to listen.
