Banghoek Valley
Misty Mountain Drama
Once known as the scary corner where wild animals roamed, this area is now famous for gravity-defying vineyards and cool-climate elegance. It sits just over the pass and offers some of the most dramatic views around.

Expect wines with serious backbone. Because of the elevation and cooler temperatures, Cabernet Sauvignon here retains distinct herbal notes and bright acidity rather than just being a fruit bomb. Chardonnay showcases steely precision mixed with citrus zest. It is all about structure and finesse, meaning these bottles can age for years or be enjoyed right now if you have a decent steak handy.

Driving over the Helshoogte Pass feels like entering a different world. The mountains loom large and the roads wind tightly, giving everything a sense of epic scale. It is quieter than the main town but screams luxury, with art-filled wineries and manicured gardens. Locals call it the "scary corner" for historical reasons, but today the only thing scary is how quickly your credit card limit approaches.

Delaire Graff
Tokara
Thelema
Big names dominate the skyline here. Delaire Graff and Tokara are the heavy hitters offering spectacular architecture alongside their wine. For slightly more intimate experiences, check out Bartinney or Oldenburg, who are making waves with their focused portfolios. Thelema Mountain Vineyards remains a legendary pioneer that put this specific ward on the map decades ago.

Lions, Leopards, and Vines
Legend has it that early travelers were absolutely terrified of this valley. Before it was carpeted in orderly rows of Cabernet Sauvignon, the Banghoek (literally "Scary Corner" in Dutch) was a dense, wild forest teeming with elephants, leopards, and lions. Farmers would actually abandon their wagons and run for their lives if they got stuck here after dark. It took quite a bit of bravery—and perhaps a desperate need for good agricultural land—to finally tame these slopes. Nowadays, the only wild beasts you might encounter are oversized SUVs navigating the narrow winery driveways or a particularly aggressive goose guarding a pond.

The Madness of Webb
The Madness of Webb
The Madness of Webb
In the early 1980s, the region was mostly fruit orchards until a visionary named Gyles Webb bought a dilapidated fruit farm at the top of the pass. Everyone thought he was mad to plant grapes so high up where it was chilly and wet. He restored the manor house, planted vines, and launched Thelema. When his first wines released, they shocked the South African establishment with their pure fruit and elegance. Suddenly, everyone wanted a piece of the "scary corner," transforming it from a humble fruit basket into one of the most prestigious wine addresses in the country.

While the wine is superb, Banghoek is also responsible for starting the "wine farm as art gallery" trend in Stellenbosch. When GT Ferreira bought the land for Tokara, he didn't just want a shed for fermentation, he built an architectural masterpiece. Not to be outdone, neighbor Laurence Graff (of diamond fame) turned Delaire Graff into what is essentially a six-star hotel with a winery attached. This friendly rivalry of aesthetics raised the bar for wine tourism globally, proving that sipping Sauvignon Blanc tastes significantly better when you are staring at a multi-million dollar bronze sculpture and a manicured garden.
